EXCELLENT, WONDERFUL

“Excellent”, “wonderful”: it was in terms like these that the participants of 1st Meeting of Blessed Alexandrina’s Propagaters had classified in the end the intense day of work that they had lived.

The meeting was initiated at the foreseen hour and the program was executed in the complete, even so with some freedom. Leo Madigan repeatedly intervined to ask for clarifications and also to give them, as when he informed that Francis Johnston was not priest, in contrast of what many assumed.

After the opening by Rev. Fr Granja, were read, but no integrally, the messages that Maria Rita and Rev. Fr Pier Luigi Cameroni, Yolanda, Salvador Sandoval and Josie had sent. Maria Rita and Rev. Fr Pier Luigi Cameroni had among others tinhs informed that they are preparing a book that is a kind of guide for the visit to the holy places of Balasar; Yolanda, hindered at the departure hour of  coming due to the problematic politic situation of her country, sent a long text and promised that in the first chance would come to Balasar; Salvador Sandoval, Spanish professor of classic languages, sent an extensive and nice article on the theology of the Cross in the Blessed Alexandrina’s life and work and promised that he would not fail the next meeting; Josie, who had sent a Peace Cross, of Saint Brigid, lamented the impossibility to be present.

Copies of these messages had been later distributed to the participants.

In the occasion, as relevant moment, was presented the Eugénie Signorile’s new book, Solo per Amore (Only for love), an autobiography of Alexandrina.

José Ferreira and Afonso Rocha had developed then, in brief register, the subjects that had been attributed to them.

In this moment happened the great surprise of the day, when the Archbishop of Braga and Cardinal José Saiva Martins had entered the room; coming from Braga to Oporto, the Archbishop wanted to find Rev. Fr Granja and thus appeared there with his illustrious companion. Photographs had been taken; some of them will be soon placed in the Official Site; the Cardinal José Saraiva Martins signed the guestbook in Alexandrina’s House.

To the people present was distributed a relic of the Beata and two compact discs with varied information.

The lunch in a restaurant of the neighborhoods was followed, that also ran very well.

The afternoon period begun with a visit to Alexandrina’s House; later, was followed other visit, to Felismina Martins, who is of good health and kept long and interesting colloquy with her visitors. After, there was still occasion to see the Gresufes’s house, where the Beata was born.

In the return to the Center of Studies, Leo Madigan presented his bold project of DVD, that now will be studied; if it has Fr Granja’s approval, it will launch with effectiveness the Alexandrina’s name in the almost universal world of the English language.

In the next year, the meeting will be probably repeated, with a wider number of guests.

The Alexandrina’s Bulletin will be relaunched in October, when will be innaugurated the Beata’s image, according to the hope of Rev. Fr. Granja.

As it is said in the beginning, the participants had left this meeting with a very positive impression.

Leo Madigan’s viewpoint

Saturday August 5th I drove with Manuel Carvalho from Fatima to Balasar. José Ferreira had organized a symposium of parties concerned with propagating name and spirituality of Blessed Alexandrina da Costa. It was an engaging and productive day. I was most impressed by Padre Granja who not only has a busy parish to run, but also a shrine which attracts many hundreds of visitors each month. He actually took time out from this great pressure of work to spend the whole day with the meeting and even took us to lunch.

Mid morning we were surprised, and delighted, by a the arrival of Cardinal Martins, who heads the discastery concerned with the Causes of Saints in Rome, and the Archbishop of Braga.

In the afternoon we visited several places concerned with the life of Blessed Alexandrina, the most interesting of which, for me, was the house in Gresufes where the Beata was born. I had never been there before.

When Alexandrina was alive it was said that no one visiting her ever left without feeling he had been in the presence of the supernatural. That is a gift that she didn’t take with her when she went to heaven in 1955. It is her legacy to Balasar and the experience of it is never so poignant as when one is leaving. It is then that the visitor is suddenly conscious that he has been immersed in the joy of sanctity. And it was no different for Manuel and I when we finally drove away from Balasar around six thirty in the evening.
